New Study: Diabetes Medication Improves Cognition and Alleviates Alzheimer’s Progression

The diabetes drug canagliflozin improves learning and memory in middle-aged male mice and reduces brain plaques in Alzheimer’s model mice.

The FDA-approved diabetes medication canagliflozin improves cognition in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease in males only.

Participants: Middle-aged adults carrying two copies of the APOE4 gene 
Dosage: 1 mg/kg/day of rapamycin for 4 weeks

The prescription drug rapamycin a.k.a. sirolimus, an FDA-approved mTOR inhibitor, increases the brain volume of cognitively normal individuals at risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease.
