The Overlooked Organ That Could Hold the Key to Fighting Aging

Scientists are researching ways to regrow the thymus, an immune organ that vanishes with age, to suppress the tolls of aging.

An organ involved in immunity, the thymus, vanishes as people get older, and scientists are researching ways to regrow it to fight aging.

Immunity

Model: Female Balb/c mice exposed to ultraviolet radiation 
Dosage: 2%, 5%, 7.5%, or 12.5% of nicotinamide (weight/volume) applied topically, once daily, five times per week

The NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) precursor nicotinamide prevents skin aging, in part by targeting age-promoting senescent cells in mice. 


Model: Male Wistar rats 
Dosage: 1.5 g/kg/day of orally administered glycine for 5 months

Glycine, an amino acid shown to extend the lifespan of mice, moderately extends the lifespan of flies and counters brain and muscle degeneration in aged rats. 

Aging &amp; Longevity

Model: Six adults who received intravenous NAD+ and eight adults who received intravenous NR
Dosage: 500 mg of intravenous NAD+ or 500 mg of intravenous NR daily for four consecutive days

Pilot Human Study Supports Safety of NAD+ IV and NR IV Infusions

A Stanford study supports the short-term safety of NAD+ and NR infusion therapies, and participants who received NR infusions exhibited significantly lower HbA1c (a blood test that reflects average blood sugar over two to three months).

A Stanford human trial provides the first data supporting the safety of NAD+ IV and NR IV therapies.

Participants: Healthy, overweight older adults 
Dosage: 6 mg/day of spermidine supplemented orally for 13 weeks

Oxford scientists find that spermidine, a naturally occurring molecule that declines with age, rejuvenates aging immune cells and improves vaccine protection in older adults.
