Finalist Teams Awarded $1 Million in XPrize Healthspan Contest to Transform Healthy Aging

The XPrize Healthspan—which will split $101 million among teams developing therapeutics to restore muscle, cognitive, and immune function in older adults—has named 10 teams receiving $1 million each.

The XPrize Healthspan competition has named its top 20 finalist groups that will submit their aging intervention therapies for human trial testing.

Aging &amp; Longevity

Model: Aged C57B/6 mice (between 18-25 months old) 
Dosage: 5 mg/kg/day of ABT-263 was fed to mice while 50 mg/kg/day of dichloroacetate and metformin were injected. For lifespan, they were administered for five consecutive days, followed by a two-day intermission, then an additional five consecutive days, followed by a 6-week intermission.

The combination of dichloroacetate, metformin, and ABT-263 eliminates cancer cells and age-promoting senescent cells while improving endurance and extending lifespan in mice.

By examining chemical tags on DNA that modulate our genes, scientists have discovered which genes are most affected by aging across more than a dozen human tissues.

Epigenetics

Model: Old (17- to 19-month-old) C57BL6 mice 
Dosage: 14 mg/mg/day of rapamycin in food for 5 months

A purported longevity drug, rapamycin, alters immune cells associated with cancer and reduces brain inflammation in mice. 

Immunity

Model: Male Wistar rats 
Dosage: 1.5 g/kg/day of orally administered glycine for 5 months

Glycine, an amino acid shown to extend the lifespan of mice, moderately extends the lifespan of flies and counters brain and muscle degeneration in aged rats.
