Safety Concept
The Fabius is equipped with a battery backup system which provides at least 90 minutes of operation in the unlikely event of a power failure. During this time, all ventilation and monitoring functions are available. In the Fabius, the electrical supply and the pneumatic supply are completely independent. Therefore, in case of total electrical supply failure, the user is always able to deliver fresh gas and anesthetic vapor using manual or spontaneous ventilation, as long as there is a supply of gas. The fresh gas flow is adjusted on the flowmeters and the mechanical oxygen ratio control (S-ORC) is active.

The Fabius ventilator is electrically driven so, in the unlikely event of the loss of central gas supply, the remaining cylinder supplies are not consumed by the ventilator but are available for delivery to the patient.

If there is a loss of both the central and cylinder supplies, the Fabius can ventilate the patient with pure room air. The ventilator will draw in room air as soon as there is insufficient exhaled and fresh gas to satisfy the total expiratory volume of the piston chamber. This condition is detected by the system and the user is informed with an alarm message.
